How is a police certificate obtained?
What is a police certificate?
A police certificate is a document issued by the police that shows whether you have any recorded remarks in the criminal records. The certificate only includes information relevant to the specific purpose for which you are applying — such as working with children, finances, or positions of trust.
The certificate is sent to you personally. It is not automatically shared with the employer, you must upload it to the portal yourself.
What is a purpose declaration?
To apply for a police certificate, the police require a purpose declaration — a document confirming why the certificate is needed and which law or regulation it is based on.
- Manymore completes this declaration for you
- You can download it from the portal
- You must upload it with your application at politiet.no
When is it legal to require a police certificate?
A police certificate can only be requested when there is a valid legal basis established by law or regulation.
It is not allowed to request a certificate "just in case" or based on general concern.
Common legal grounds we use:
- Voluntary organizations: Police Regulations § 34-1, cf. Police Records Act § 39(1)
- Kindergarten and schools: Education Act § 17-11, cf. Police Records Act § 39(1)
